Raleigh: Frank Street
This project in Raleigh integrated multiple green infrastructure elements, including two cisterns, a rain garden, and a native plant bed to manage runoff effectively while enhancing the landscape with native vegetation.
Cistern + Native Bed, and Rain Garden
At the front of the home, a combination of stormwater control practices were installed. On the right side of the home, a 35 sq ft rain garden of 10 inches deep was created.
On the left side of the home, a 305-gallon cistern collects water from a roof downspout and flows into a native plant bed. Designed for minor ponding, this system encourages water to slowly percolate through the native vegetation and flow gently across the lawn.
Both gardens were planted with native grasses and sedges, selected for their adaptability, deep-rooting characteristics, and stormwater filtration benefits.
Cistern
A 1,100-gallon cistern was installed beneath the back deck to capture roof runoff. This large-capacity system helps reduce the volume of stormwater leaving the property while providing a source of non-potable water reuse.
