Carrboro: The Cedars

This streambank stabilization project in The Cedars neighborhood focused on restoring a severely eroded section of a perennial waterway impacted by Tropical Storm Chantal.

Working in partnership with The Cedars of Bolin Forest HOA and CFB Contracting, the project addressed both structural instability and ecological degradation along the stream corridor. Initial efforts included the removal of invasive plant species within the riparian buffer, helping to reduce competition and create space for native vegetation to reestablish.

Following site preparation, the buffer was enhanced through the installation of native plant species selected for their adaptability to wet conditions and their role in stabilizing streambanks. Plantings included elderberry, swamp rose, sea oats, and Juncus, all of which contribute to improved soil retention, increased biodiversity, and long-term resilience against erosion.

The combined approach of invasive removal and native buffer restoration strengthens the health of the stream ecosystem while protecting surrounding property from future storm impacts.
