Carrboro: Bolin Creek Drive

This residential stormwater retrofit project on Bolin Forest Drive addressed multiple sources of unmanaged runoff flowing from both transportation surfaces and rooftop areas into an adjacent ephemeral stream.

The property was experiencing disconnected impervious runoff, with stormwater from the driveway and roof contributing directly to erosion and water quality concerns downstream. To mitigate these impacts, a comprehensive solution was designed to capture, redirect, and treat runoff onsite.

A structural conveyance system was installed to intercept and reroute driveway runoff into a newly constructed terraced rain garden. This feature allows stormwater to infiltrate naturally, reducing flow velocity and filtering pollutants before they reach the stream. In addition, rooftop runoff was redirected into a 350-gallon cistern, providing water storage for reuse while reducing the volume of runoff entering the landscape.

The completed system successfully treats 100% of the driveway runoff and approximately 50% of the roof area, significantly decreasing the property’s stormwater impact while supporting sustainable water management practices.
