GMTRG Orange County Student Training Fall 2025

This fall, we hosted our first Advanced Training program for Orange County students. As part of the program, a group of ten students gained hands-on experience installing a rain garden from start to finish. Their training included:

  • Surveying the landowner’s property to identify problem areas and understand the path of rainwater flow

  • Determining the optimal location for a rain garden to mitigate stormwater erosion issues

  • Taking measurements of the proposed site and digging test holes to evaluate soil drainage rates

  • Staking out the shape and layout of the garden

  • Excavating the garden to meet required specifications

  • And finally planting and mulching the rain garden

The project was a great success, resulting in the installation of a functional rain garden for a local Carrboro landowner while providing valuable real-world experience for participating students. We can’t wait to host more editions of our Advanced Program in 2026! Stay tuned for upcoming registration information.
